Students seeking an LAS Major or Minor may enroll in one of the following options for independent study with the approval of the LAS Academic Director.
LAS 494 - Independent Study in LAS: This course fosters independent study leading to a thesis, original piece of research, or creative project on a Latin American or Caribbean subject. The course may be completed in the Fall, Spring or Summer terms, provided the student receives the support of a faculty mentor willing to guide the research project throughout the semester. In order to receive a grade for this course, students must seek the approval of the LAS Academic Director before enrolling, provide proof of faculty participation via the "Faculty Agreement Form," and submit all the required materials by the last official day of classes in the semester in which the student is enrolled.
LAS 505 - Internship in LAS: This course encourages on-site experience in business, governmental organization, or non-porfit organization dealing with Latin American and/or the Caribbean. The course may be completed in the United States while interning at a company/government office with strong ties to Latin America and/or the Caribbean or as part of a summer or semester abroad program in Latin America or the Caribbean. In order to receive a grade for this course, students must seek the approval of the LAS Academic Director before enrolling and submit the following materials by the last official day of classes in the semester in which the student is enrolled.
*Proof of completion of at least 100 hours of unpaid internship work.
*Submit a monthly log signed by your supervisor to attes to this fact.
LAS 506 - Civic Engagement in LAS: This course encourages on-site experience in a civic engagement project in Latin America or the Caribbean. This course may be completed in the United States while volunteering for a non-profit organization with strong ties to Latin America and/or the Caribbean or as part of an accredited program anywhere in Latin America or the Caribbean. In order to receive a grade for this course, students must seek the approval of the LAS Academic Director before enrolling and submit the following materials by the last official day of classes in the semester in which the student is enrolled.
*Proof of completion of at least 100 hours of volunteer work.
*Submit a monthly log signed by your supervisor to attest to this fact.
